Our Annual Food Drive

Once again, New Hampshire Family Dentistry is proud to be hosting a food drive to benefit the New Hampshire Food Bank. Last year our patients donated 77 pounds of non-perishable foods. This year, we are hoping to surpass that amount and reach 100 pounds! We will be collecting non-perishable foods now until November 15th.
The New Hampshire Food Bank provides food completely free of charge to local food pantries. In fact the NH Food Bank is the primary supplier to over 400 organizations statewide.
Help us in the fight against hunger and bring your donation to our office during regular business hours. Every little bit helps and we greatly appreciate your donation!

Tooth Extraction Aftercare

If a tooth has been broken or damaged by decay, your dentist will try to rectify it with a filling, crown or other dental treatment. However, when there's too much damage for the tooth to be repaired, the tooth may need to be extracted — or removed.

After the procedure, it is normal for the area to be tender for the first few days. In most cases, over-the-counter pain relief is enough to alleviate any soreness. Avoid medication that contains aspirin because it thins the blood and can make your mouth bleed. In some instances your dentist may prescribe painkillers. Whether taking over-the-counter medicine or prescription, be sure to start taking it immediately after the extraction. Don’t wait until the pain flares up. It's easier to prevent pain than to make it go away.

Here are some steps you can take following a tooth extraction to promote the healing process:

  • Your mouth may continue to feel numb for an hour or two after the extraction. You should take care to not bite your lip, cheek or tongue during this time.

  • A blood clot will form in the extraction site. This aids in healing. Avoid  rinsing your mouth vigorously, sucking on straws, smoking, drinking alcohol or brushing teeth that are next to the extraction site for 72 hours. These actions will dislodge or dissolve the clot and slow the healing process.

  • Apply ice packs to your face for 15 minutes on and then 15 minutes off to reduce swelling.

  • After the bleeding stops, stick to a  soft food diet for the first day or two. Examples include soups, yogurts, fruit milkshakes, smoothies and mashed potatoes. Be sure to rinse after every meal and snack, making sure that the water removes any bits of food around the extraction area.

After a few days you will feel fine and can resume your normal activities.

Foods To Brighten Your Smile

If your teeth need a little brightening, but you’re not quite ready for whitening treatments, here are 5 natural foods for whiter teeth that you may already have in your kitchen.

Strawberries

To brighten your smile, mash up strawberries and rub them on your teeth. Leave for five minutes then rinse with water and brush and floss as usual.

Raw Veggies

These healthy fruits and veggies act like natural stain removers by working to scrub teeth clean.

Cheese

Hard cheeses are best for whitening, as they help remove food particles.

Raisins

Chewing raisins creates saliva, which helps to prevent plaque from developing by reducing the acids created by other foods and bacteria in your mouth.

Water

Sipping water during and after a meal also helps rinse your mouth of any debris and loose plaque.

These foods not only taste good, they can help make your teeth healthier and whiter!

February: Children's Dental Health Month

Reports show that American students miss 51 million hours of school every year because of oral health problems and students who have had recent oral health issues are more likely to have a lower grade point average than students who have not.

Every February the ADA recognizes National Children's Dental Health Month. To raise awareness about the importance of oral health for our kids, here are some tips to help them maintain good oral health habits.

Here are some basic steps to help our children maintain good dental health:

  • Brush for 2 minutes, twice a day - set a kitchen timer to help time their brushing
  • Show your children how to floss. If traditional floss proves too difficult, try disposable floss picks.
  • Eat healthy and limit sugary snacks and drinks.
  • Serve as a good role model by practicing good dental hygiene habits with your kids
  • Be sure to visit the dentist for routine checkups.
Developing good habits at an early age and scheduling regular dental visits helps children get a good start on a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums,

Benefits of CEREC

Getting dental crowns used to be such a chore. You would have to find time to schedule multiple dental visits, the first visit, to take impressions of the teeth, where they are then sent off to a laboratory to create the crowns. The second appointment to finally get your dental restoration.

What is CEREC?

CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restorations of Esthetic CeramicCEREC crowns use 3D imaging to create crowns while the patient is still in the chair, letting patients get their crowns in just one visit. In as little as fifteen minutes, your crown can be ready for placement, creating results that can last a lifetime.
Other restorations like veneers or inlays/onlays can also be designed and fabricated in-office while you wait.

No Need For Temporary Crowns

Teeth need to be protected while traditional crowns are being made. That is why patients receive temporary crowns to wear until they receive their permanent crowns at the second appointment. Temporary crowns can be ill-fitting and uncomfortable. You will not have to worry about temporary crowns with the one-visit CEREC crown option!

No Dental Impressions

Dental impressions are taken for a variety of reasons. The process typically involves placing dental trays containing a putty-like substance into the mouth to create a mold of the teeth. Dental impressions can be uncomfortable, especially for those with a bad gag reflex. Luckily CEREC crowns do not need dental impressions! New Hampshire Family Dentistry is equipped with CAD/CAM technology to take 3D images that will provide all of the information needed to create your crowns.

Many patients are great candidates for CEREC crowns. If you are dealing with a severely misshapen, discolored, broken or cracked tooth that needs repair, then a CEREC crown may be able to help.
